Who will do better next season: Spurs or Chelsea?

Now that the 2022/23 Premier League season is over, It’s safe to say Tottenham and Chelsea had seasons to forget as they both ended outside the European spots. Both teams saw coaches come and go throughout the season. Tottenham saw Antonio Conte walk out of the club after his rant about his players during a press conference. Assistant coach Christian Stellini took charge but was quickly given his marching orders after his sides 6-1 humbling against Newcastle. Finally, Ryan Mason took charge until the end of the season.

At the start, Chelsea’s hopes were high. After a 3rd place finish in the 2021/22 season and a positive summer transfer window, Thomas Tuchel’s men were hoping to be challengers for the title this season. Little did they know what was in store. Tuchel out, Graham Potter out, and Frank Lampard out, Chelsea played manager roulette all season and it just got worse and worse for the club. The Blues lost match after match and couldn’t find the back of the net. This season was easily Chelsea’s worst in their history.

Now it’s over, the summer transfer window is open and there are a lot of great options. Chelsea has already signed Christophe Nkunku from RB Leipzig and are close to bringing Brighton’s Moises Caicedo to the club. So far, Tottenham have made Dejan Kulusevskis loan move permanent and are looking to add David Raya to their squad. Most importantly for the two clubs, they have new managers.

Mauricio Pochettino will take over at the Bridge next season. The former Tottenham and PSG coach is well respected across Europe and will hopefully take Chelsea back to the top. The squad needs to be trimmed this summer since the Blues spent big all season. While the team needs to get rid of the “dead wood”, it also needs to buy the right players for the club. Chelsea spent a lot of money last season, but on the wrong players. This summer gives Pochettino and Boehly the opportunity to make smart signings, not just big signings.

Tottenham have hired former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou. Since joining the club in June 2021, Ange won two Scottish league titles along with qualifying for the Champions League group stages this past season. Spurs fans are very excited to have a new coach who has come up the ranks in recent years. Tottenham’s biggest battle this summer will be to keep Harry Kane at the club, as the English striker has made it clear that he wants out. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Manchester United are said to be interested. Spurs also need a new keeper and are hoping they can sign David Raya from Brentford to fill in for club legend Hugo Lloris. Also, the squad is lacking in solid defensive players. Countless times this season we saw Spurs go 2-0 or 3-0 down in the first 15 minutes of matches and the defense has to take all the blame. Like Chelsea, Spurs need to clear house and sign good players instead of expensive players.

In terms of who will do better, it all depends on which team has the better transfer window. Right now, however, I believe Pochettino will take Chelsea into the top four next season (Check out our new article coming soon on 10 bold premier league predictions for next season) while Tottenham will be lucky if they finish in any of the European positions. The future is bright for both clubs but it will take some hard work and dedication from both teams if they want to compete against the elites of world football.
