Is Pochettino the right man for the job?

Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, and soon to be Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s game of manager roulette seemingly never ends as The Blues recently appointed former Tottenham and PSG boss as the manager for the new season. After Chelsea’s title winning-season in 2015 under Jose Mourinho, finding a long-term coach seems to be difficult for The Blues. Both Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel appeared to be the answer for the team, but each coach failed to last two years at the club before getting fired

Come June, Chelsea will start their new era under Mauricio Pochettino, but is it the right move? Pochettino’s managerial history includes getting fired by Spurs after bottling two Premier League titles, and a Champions League. With PSG, he managed to win the French League but failed to win the Champions League with the likes of Kylien Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr. as an attacking force.

For Pochettino, his career has been filled with “almost”. He almost won the Premier League with Tottenham, twice, and he almost won the Champions League, but is that good enough? Have Chelsea’s standards dropped so far that they will settle with “good enough”? Pochettino has proved he can do relatively well in the Premier League and achieve top-four spots every season, but he is yet to win a trophy in England. He spent five years at Tottenham and although the media portrayed him as one of the best coaches in the league, he never won anything.

It’s safe to say Pochettino is still a well-respected manager across Europe and has enough experience to help Chelsea get out of their bad form. When it comes down to long-term success, he’s likely not the man for the job. To be the coach of an elite club like Chelsea, you need to have experience winning a trophy. With Tuchel and Conte, they had experienced winning silverware; Tuchel won the DFB-Pokal at Dortmund along with -change “along with” to “and” every trophy available in France with PSG, Conte also won the Serie A with Juventus. When both coaches arrived at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel won the Champions League and Conte won the Premier League, both winning competitions in their debut season. Knowing how to win is important when facing a daunting task like the Chelsea job.

Pochettino will no doubt have success at Chelsea in-terms of bringing them back into the top four and MAYBE winning a minor trophy like the Carabao Cup. When it comes down to long-term success he isn’t experienced enough to take Chelsea back to the top in England and across Europe. Pochettino is likely doomed to become another ghost on the sidelines of Stamford Bridge.
