Maguire Out! Contenders for new Manchester United captain

Harry Maguire is set to lose the captaincy role at Manchester United due to the England defender losing his spot in the first team. Bruno Fernandes took the role as captain last season and it was a success for him and the club, leading the team to third place in the league along with winning the Carabao Cup. Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has decided that the club needs a captain who plays first-team football.

Here are some worthy contenders for the role:

Bruno Fernandes: Arrived January 2020

Bruno Fernandes signed for United back in 2020 when the club was going through an inconsistent season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. When the Portuguese midfielder was introduced, United were a team reborn. Their attack had more structure. Bruno was the perfect playmaker for United. The goals and assists he provided transformed the attack. Since 2020, Bruno Fernandes’ G/A is 64 goals and 36 assists. When Bruno was interim captain last season, the team's win rate was 89%. He's proven that he can handle the role as leader of the team.

Casemiro: Arrived August 2022

It’s only been a year since Casemiro made his move to Old Trafford from Real Madrid, but oh man! What a difference he makes to this team!! Before, United had a midfield of Fred and McTominay and every time they played, United would get dominated by other teams' midfielders. With Casemiro, the Red Devils look solid and comfortable in the center of the field. Having Casemiro also gave Bruno and Eriksen the freedom to push forward knowing that Casemiro would be behind them to stop any opponents’ counter-attack attempts. Casemiro is a winner. He won five Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, he knows what it means to win. Bruno won trophies in Portugal but he hasn’t experienced winning a major trophy like the Champions League. Casemiro would be a great captain.

Raphael Varane: Arrived August 2021

Varane is very similar to Casemiro. Before, United’s defense was very poor. Lindelof and Maguire were too slow and weren’t good enough to be Manchester United starting defenders. When Varane came in along with Lisandro Martinez, United looked great defensively. At home, United only conceded nine goals in the Premier League last season. Varane won a lot at Real Madrid with Casemiro, making him a natural-born leader. However, the Frenchman's tendency to get injured would be the only real problem with him becoming captain.

Marcus Rashford: At United since he was a kid

30 goals last season as a winger! Marcus Rashford was one of the most prolific forwards last year in the Premier League, some believe he deserves the Ballon D’Or! Rashford’s time at United has not always been great. The England forward has been inconsistent for the Devils, he’ll play poorly one season and be amazing the next. Rashford definitely cares about Manchester United, but to be a captain, you need to be a consistent leader the team can rely on to pick them up when they’re losing an important game. A great forward, not a great captain.
